Arid Lands Development Focus (ALDEF) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the lives of communities in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). Established in 1989 as Wajir Volunteer Group, the organization transitioned into a fully-fledged development and humanitarian agency to address systemic challenges affecting pastoralist and marginalized communities. Our work is rooted in a deep understanding of the socio-economic, environmental, and governance issues shaping ASAL regions, enabling us to design and implement interventions that are both sustainable and impactful.
Guided by a vision of empowered pastoralist communities living dignified lives, ALDEF operates through strategic programmes that promote good governance, resilience building, humanitarian response, and institutional capacity strengthening. By leveraging local knowledge, fostering inclusive partnerships, and integrating innovative approaches, the organization ensures that its interventions align with the evolving needs of ASAL populations.
Collaboration with national and international partners strengthens our capacity to address critical issues such as education access, climate adaptation, food security, and social accountability. As the convener and host of the ASAL Humanitarian Network (AHN), ALDEF plays a pivotal role in amplifying local voices and advocating for sustainable, community-driven solutions. Our commitment to localization, equity, and resilience underpins every initiative, ensuring that interventions are not only effective but also sustainable in the long term.
With a strong presence across ASAL regions and a history of impactful programming, ALDEF remains a trusted partner in humanitarian and development work. Through strategic planning, evidence-based approaches, and active community engagement, we continue to drive transformative change, creating a future where ASAL communities thrive with dignity and self-sufficiency.

These core values—Professionalism, Respect for Diversity, People-Centered Approach, Equity, and Volunteerism—guide every aspect of our programs and interactions.
